Abstract:
This thesis describes Executive Information Systems (EIS), in particular an EIS for the Vorarlberger Landesregierung (VLR). The concepts of EIS are important for companies to use their information more effectively. After a general overview of management-oriented information systems this thesis focuses on the development of an EIS for the Vorarlberger Landesregierung. The requirements of the VLR are future-oriented and demand a system which extends the original meaning of an EIS. Therefore the use of internet technologies seems to be convenient. A web-based solution with XML offers the Internet as a worldwide communications-infrastructure and a web browser as a homogeneous, platform independent and generally known user interface for the whole system. The use of internet technologies also requires security measures. XML is spreading in different fields and is ideal for modelling different data, as it is an easy and platform independent format. Stylesheets provide for flexible presentation of the same data objects for different output devices and different users, making XML an ideal basis for an EIS.
