|Biography:||Atakan Aral is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Software Technology and Interactive Systems, Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). Before joining TU Wien in 2016, he was a Research Assistant at the Faculty of Computer and Informatics Engineering, Istanbul Technical University (ITU) for five years. Atakan received a dual MSc degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (2011) and ITU (2012), and a PhD degree in Computer Engineering from ITU (2016). His PhD thesis is titled "Resource Mapping Optimization for Distributed Cloud Services". During his studies, he was awarded with six scholarships from institutions including Italian and Turkish governments for his academic success.
Atakan participated in several research projects funded by organizations such as European Research Council (ERC), Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), and Austrian Science Fund (FWF). He served on the Organizing Committee of IEEE NOMS 2016 and as a TPC member in Symposium on the Evolution of Cloud Computing in SoftCOM 2017 and IEEE NOMS 2018. He was invited as reviewer for numerous international journals and conferences including TCC, TPDS, TNSM, IEEE Cloud Computing Magazine, IEEE Software, IEEE GLOBECOM/CLOUDCOM/CLOUD/EDGE/ICPADS and IEEE/ACM CCGrid. His research interests center around resource management for distributed and virtualized computing systems such as Intercloud and Edge. Currently, he focuses on failure resilience of unreliable Edge Computing resources. He is also interested in Graph Theory and Discrete Optimization.
